Kepong:A 20-year-old Chinese national university student appeared at the Sessions Court, pleading not guilty to charges of grievously injuring his former girlfriend and her younger brother with a knife. The incidents allegedly occurred at a house in Taman Sri Bintang, Kepong, at 5 am on September 29.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the student, identified as Chen Jun, faces charges under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which could result in a maximum prison term of 20 years, along with a possible fine or caning if convicted. The victims in this case are Leong Kai Ting, 21, and her brother, Leong Shun Jie, 18.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurainizatul Farhana Zainal argued against granting bail, citing the non-bailable nature of the offences. However, she suggested that if bail were considered, it should be set at RM8,000 with two local sureties, and that Chen Jun should surrender his passport to the court.
Chen Jun's defense lawyer, Ling Yee Siew, requested a reduction in the bail amount, noting that her client is a finance student at a private university and does not pose a flight risk. Ling also highlighted that Chen Jun suffers from depression, as indicated in a medical report dated September 14, and has a leg injury from self-harm, necessitating ongoing treatment. Chen Jun attended the court session in a wheelchair.
Judge Suhaila Haron ultimately set bail at RM8,000 with the conditions proposed by the prosecution and scheduled the next court mention for November 11.
