Beijing:China has reiterated its support for Malaysia's bid to become a full member of BRICS, while also emphasizing the importance of Malaysia's role in enhancing cooperation between China and ASEAN member states.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed the support during his meeting with Chinese Vice-Premier Ding Xuexiang at the Great Hall of the People. This follows an earlier assurance from Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Ahmad Zahid highlighted the significance of China's support, noting that Malaysia's Prime Minister has already secured backing from the original BRICS member countries for Malaysia's admission to the group. He also mentioned that China hopes Malaysia will continue to act as a bridge in strengthening cooperation between China and ASEAN nations.
The deputy prime minister pointed out that Malaysia is expected to maintain its role in trilateral cooperation among ASEAN, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and China, through summits involving these parties. Malaysia previously hosted the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit during last year's ASEAN Summit and is anticipated to continue this role at the next trilateral summit in China.
Efforts to promote the use of the renminbi in trade transactions with China and GCC countries were also discussed. Ahmad Zahid mentioned that such initiatives could impact currency exchange arrangements involving the ringgit, renminbi, and GCC currencies.
China is set to assume the BRICS chairmanship in 2027 and will host the 19th Summit of the organization next year. BRICS was established in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2011.
