Johor bahru: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) striker Bergson da Silva believes their 3-3 draw with English Premier League giants Chelsea yesterday is a strong reflection of the team's character ahead of the 2026-2027 Malaysia Super League season. Bergson, who was among the scorers in the six-goal thriller, said JDT have never been afraid to test themselves against bigger opponents and once again showed they are capable of springing surprises, whether at home or away.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Bergson emphasized the importance of character over results, highlighting the team's ability to challenge formidable opponents. "Winning or losing, it's about character. We never tire of surprising people what we can do against big-name opponents here at home, or away," he stated following the match.

The 35-year-old striker, entering his sixth season with the Southern Tigers, mentioned that he is not setting any specific personal targets for the upcoming season. Instead, he plans to tackle each challenge as it arises, while continuing to support the club's pursuit of success. "To be honest, I don't have any specific target, because every step we take on the road is... something new. Like (yesterday) before the game, who would have expected us to hold Chelsea to a draw. (in fact) we almost won," he expressed.

Bergson also expressed his excitement for the new season, emphasizing a focus on hard work rather than setting expectations. "Our idea is to keep moving forward and be excited about the new season. No expectations, just work hard," he added.

Additionally, Bergson noted his satisfaction with his preparations for this season, contrasting with previous campaigns where injuries hindered his involvement. The uninterrupted preparation period has enabled him to develop better chemistry with JDT's new players ahead of their opening competitive fixture.
