CGTN Documentary Highlights Long March’s Influence on China’s Modern Tech Industries

Beijing:China Global Television Network (CGTN) has unveiled a new documentary titled "Breaking Through," commemorating the 90th anniversary of the Long March's conclusion this month.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the series combines elements of a travelogue and historical analysis, retracing the path of the Red Army's Long March. It explores the reasons behind the march, its execution, and its lasting impact on contemporary China.

The documentary posits that the Long March's most significant legacy may be reflected in today's developments, such as China's commercial space initiatives and its domestic electric vehicle battery sector. It draws parallels between these modern industries and the historic march, noting that both efforts were motivated by a desire to overcome encirclement and innovate.

The Long March began in October 1934 when 86,000 soldiers of the Central Red Army embarked on a strategic retreat to evade military defeat. The arduous journey involved numerous battles and traversals of challenging terrains like rivers, mountains, and swamps. By October 1935, only about 8,000 soldiers reached their destination in northern Shaanxi.

The march officially concluded in October 1936 with the convergence of the Red Army's main columns in the northwest. American journalist Edgar Snow described the Long March as "an odyssey unequalled in modern times" after meeting Mao Zedong and other survivors.
