Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the Cabinet is set to engage in further discussions this Friday concerning the United States tariff issue. "Only then we will respond. Wait for Friday," he remarked to reporters during the Iftar with the Prime Minister event, which also marked the launch of the Rakan Masjid X Rakan Muda Ramadan programme.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the discussions follow a recent decision by the US Supreme Court, which nullified most of the tariff measures introduced by former President Donald Trump. The court ruled that Trump did not possess the authority under federal law to unilaterally impose such tariffs. In response to the ruling, Trump indicated plans to introduce a new 10 percent tariff on countries globally, leveraging new powers post the Supreme Court's decision.
Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, indicated that the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) is currently evaluating the situation. MITI is actively coordinating with various stakeholders, including counterparts in Washington and partners across Southeast Asia, to determine a strategic response to the evolving tariff landscape.
