Cabinet Approves SEGiM to Oversee Gig Workers’ Welfare: DPM Ahmad Zahid

Melaka: The Cabinet has given the green light for the establishment of the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM), aiming to safeguard the welfare of the nation's 1.2 million gig workers, as announced by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, SEGiM will be tasked with regulating the Gig Workers Act 2025 (Act 872), which was passed in the Dewan Rakyat last year. The commission's responsibilities will include exploring methods to assist gig workers, particularly those who have not contributed to the Social Security Organisation (Socso) and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF).

Dr Ahmad Zahid emphasized the need for contributions to come not only from the workers but also from service providers, acknowledging that gig workers typically operate without traditional employers. SEGiM will thus work on establishing a framework for contributions from both parties.

During a discussion at the Melaka State Government's Ramadan Charity and Iftar Jamaie Mega Ceremony, Dr Ahmad Zahid highlighted that SEGiM will also address issues like coordinating minimum wages based on service provider mileage. The commission will further focus on enhancing skills through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to prepare gig workers for permanent job opportunities, securing their future and that of their families.
