BWF Approves New 3×15 Scoring System to Enhance Badminton Competitiveness

Kuala lumpur: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) members have voted to approve the adoption of the 3x15 scoring system at the 87th BWF Annual General Meeting here, with the proposal passing by the required two-thirds majority of votes cast. The 3x15 scoring system, which will replace the current 3x21 format, will come into effect on Jan 4, 2027.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, BWF president Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul described the decision as an important milestone for the future of badminton. The new system is designed to deliver more exciting and competitive matches, improve scheduling, ensure more consistent match durations, and offer potential benefits for player welfare and recovery. The format aims to keep fans engaged from the first rally to the last by introducing high-pressure moments earlier in the game and creating tighter scores and dramatic finishes.

Leeswadtrakul addressed concerns from some stakeholders by assuring that the essence of badminton would remain unchanged despite the scoring system change. She emphasized that the skills, tactics, physical and mental demands, and drama of the sport would remain intact. The change aims to protect what makes badminton special and ensure that the world's best players can continue to inspire and connect with fans globally.

The BWF stated in the same announcement that they will remain attentive to feedback from members, stakeholders, and players as the sport transitions to the new scoring format.

In addition, former BWF president and honorary life vice-president Poul-Erik Hoyer was inducted into the BWF Hall of Fame in the administrator category, acknowledging his exceptional service and contributions to the governance and global development of badminton.
