Kuala Lumpur:The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA) has emphasized that the cash assistance and targeted subsidies outlined in Budget 2027 are essential for reducing household financial burdens.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, FOMCA's chief executive officer, Dr. T. Saravanan, highlighted the importance of these measures, particularly for the B40 group, lower-income M40 households, senior citizens, persons with disabilities (OKU), and families with numerous dependents. FOMCA has expressed support for the continuation of initiatives such as the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR), Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA), RAHMAH Sales, and Agro MADANI, which aim to improve access to basic necessities.
Dr. Saravanan also backed the proposed increase in the minimum wage from RM1,700 to RM2,000 starting June 2027. He noted that this, along with expanded individual tax relief, would enhance workers' purchasing power and help them manage rising living costs.
He further commented on the extension of the My50 affordable travel pass and improvements to public transportation, including additional trains, rail infrastructure restoration, and better bus services. These measures are expected to lower household expenses related to petrol, tolls, parking, and vehicle maintenance.
FOMCA welcomed the budget's allocations to enhance local food production, support farmers and fishermen, and strengthen the food supply chain, aiming to reduce Malaysia's dependency on food imports. Dr. Saravanan pointed out that increased local production should stabilize supply and lead to more affordable prices for consumers.
Additional support for persons with disabilities, carers of bedridden patients, and special needs students was also noted as a positive development. Dr. Saravanan stressed the need for this to be accompanied by accessible healthcare, education, transport, and disability-friendly public amenities.
Overall, FOMCA praised Budget 2027 for addressing the needs of the people and its potential to alleviate cost-of-living pressures. Dr. Saravanan concluded that the success of the budget would ultimately depend on how effectively it enhances purchasing power, reduces financial burdens, and improves access to quality services and consumer rights protection.
The budget was tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the Dewan Rakyat, under the theme "Reaching for the Skies, While Anchored on Our Values."
