Machang:Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir announced that the government has designated RM21.26 billion in development expenditure for six underdeveloped states under Budget 2027. This allocation considers the varied needs of each state, specifically targeting Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis, Kedah, Sabah, and Sarawak. The funds are aimed at infrastructure development and the initiation of projects previously disclosed.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Akmal emphasized that the development spending is intended not only to propel economic growth but also to reduce the developmental disparities among states. The allocation aligns with the commitments outlined in the 13th Malaysia Plan, ensuring continued support regardless of political differences.
Of the total RM83 billion set aside for development under Budget 2027, priorities include infrastructure enhancement, economic opportunity creation, and social mobility improvement. Key projects involve the construction of a dam in Kelantan to mitigate flooding and a water treatment facility in Machang. Additionally, development of schools, healthcare facilities, and climate change initiatives are prioritized to achieve high-impact results.
During the Ruang Bicara programme, Akmal explained that the Ministry of Economy assesses development expenditures based on desired outcomes to ensure project objectives are met. He highlighted the importance of managing risks such as land acquisition delays and utility relocations to prevent them from becoming excuses for project setbacks.
The ministry is also focusing on conducting preliminary studies before full project applications proceed to avoid post-announcement challenges like site incompatibility. Akmal pointed out that if the initial phases are prolonged, it could lead to unreasonable delays in infrastructure availability for public use.
