Boulder Imaging and Oikon Partner to Implement AI Bird Protection in Southeast Europe

Zagreb: Boulder Imaging, a global provider of artificial intelligence-driven wildlife protection systems, has partnered with Croatia-based environmental consultancy Oikon Ltd to introduce advanced bird protection technology at wind farms across Southeast Europe.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the collaboration will see the deployment of Boulder Imaging’s IdentiFlight system, which supports real-time bird detection and automated turbine curtailment to reduce the impact of wind energy projects on avian biodiversity. Boulder Imaging president and chief operating officer, Don Mills, stated that the partnership would extend the reach of conservation-driven innovation.

Oikon Ltd general manager, Dalibor Hatic, remarked that the integration of the IdentiFlight system aligns with the firm’s mission to harmonize development with nature conservation. “We are excited to bring this technology to Croatia and Southeast Europe, where both wind energy expansion and biodiversity protection are essential,” he added.

The partnership comes as Croatia accelerates its renewable energy transition under the European Green Deal, with stricter permitting requirements for wind farms near Natura 2000 conservation sites. IdentiFlight enables wind developers to meet these requirements by minimizing the risk to high-concern bird species such as Eurasian griffons, golden eagles, and honey buzzards.

To date, over 520 IdentiFlight systems have been deployed across five continents, reducing bird fatalities by more than 85 percent while limiting power loss to under one percent. The first installations in Croatia are expected in 2026, focusing on migratory corridors and ecologically sensitive areas.
