BigBen Monitoring Floods and Landslides Across the Nation Round-The-Clock

Kuala lumpur: The Public Works Department (JKR) has activated its Disaster Operations Room, known as BigBen, to operate continuously as floods and landslides worsen across various states, particularly in the East Coast region, according to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. BigBen, stationed at the JKR headquarters, is tasked with coordinating infrastructure damage data nationwide, monitoring real-time field situations, directing JKR technical teams, and serving as the primary reference center for the National Disaster Management Agency.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, authorities have reported that over 13,000 individuals have been displaced by the floods across eight states, with Kelantan being the most severely affected, where more than 9,000 residents have sought refuge in relief centers. Several landslides have also occurred, including one at an apartment on Jalan Sepadu 6, Taman United, Seputeh.

Nanta expressed his sympathy and concern for the flood and landslide victims, highlighting the challenges posed by the ongoing Northeast Monsoon, which has brought heavy rainfall to the region. He emphasized the annual difficulties faced by both the public and the government due to fluctuating weather patterns.

In response to the incidents, the Works Ministry has mobilized JKR technical teams to evaluate safety and perform immediate repairs on critical infrastructure such as roads, drainage systems, and slopes. High-risk routes have been temporarily closed to avert accidents, with 24-hour monitoring in place in collaboration with local authorities and relevant agencies.

Nanta also directed all departments and agencies under the ministry, especially the JKR, to enhance their field presence and work closely with local communities and authorities to receive timely updates on the evolving situation.
