Kuala lumpur: Battery energy storage system (BESS) development should be carried out in stages at strategic locations, particularly in areas with energy supply disruption risk as well as industrial zones, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. P. Prabakaran (PH-Batu) emphasized the importance of BESS in ensuring energy security and sustainability while also reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prabakaran stated that during the transition towards renewable energy, Malaysia cannot rely solely on traditional generation methods without a robust energy storage system. He highlighted that BESS facilitates the storage of surplus energy, particularly from solar and wind sources, for use during peak demand periods, thereby stabilizing the electricity grid.
Prabakaran further proposed the formulation of clear regulations and initiatives by the government to promote investment in energy storage technologies and boost local expertise, reducing reliance on foreign technologies. He pointed out that BESS development not only ensures energy security but also creates economic opportunities, including high-skilled jobs and technology transfer, aligning with the nation's goals for a low-carbon economy and long-term competitiveness.
He concluded by stating that BESS represents a strategic investment to secure the nation's energy future, beyond being just a technical facility.
