Bernama’s “Langkahan Merdeka” Programme Promotes Appreciation Of The National Language

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), through its Digital Library unit and in collaboration with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) and the Sungai Bunus Urban Farm (KBSB), organised the "Langkahan Merdeka" programme to foster greater appreciation for the national language among Bernama staff.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, DBP Language and Literature Development Department director Abang Haliman Abang Julai mentioned that the programme, now in its fourth year, is part of efforts to promote the empowerment of the national language throughout the year. It aims to raise awareness of its importance as a means of communication and a tool for fostering unity, beyond just the National Language Month or other celebratory periods.

Abang Haliman emphasized the inclusivity of the programme, stating that it engages staff at all levels and serves as a platform to foster unity. He expressed hope that more government agencies, the private sector, and members of the public would organise language-related activities to ensure the preservation of Malaysia's heritage and national identity for future generations. The highlight of this year's National Language Month celebration is set to be held at Padang Kota Lama, Penang, on October 24, with the Prime Minister expected to officiate the event.

Meanwhile, Bernama Digital Library senior manager Hasnita Ibrahim highlighted the programme's aim to foster awareness among Bernama staff of their important role as Malaysians in contributing to societal and national development. She reflected on the significance of National Day celebrations, noting that they provide an opportunity for reflection and learning from the resilience of independence fighters. She underscored the need to internalise the spirit of their struggle for success in various aspects of life.

The "Langkahan Merdeka" programme featured several activities, including the 6,900 Steps for Independence initiative, a TikTok video creation contest, a patriotic poetry and song competition, and a book review session.
