Kuala lumpur: Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai today launched “Tough As Nails,” a new book by author and lawyer Dr. Christina SS Ooi, celebrating resilience through the inspiring journeys of eight personalities. Wong said the book reflects Ooi’s hallmark strength in storytelling and her ability to capture the human spirit within real-life struggles.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the title itself symbolizes endurance and courage, mirroring the lives of those featured and the author’s determination throughout her decades-long professional journey. “Tough As Nails showcases stories of people who have faced life’s toughest challenges and emerged stronger,” Wong highlighted during the launch event.
Recalling his long friendship with Ooi since their university days at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Wong described her as someone ‘most likely to succeed’ and a lifelong learner who has never stopped pursuing knowledge. “Christina has always been a determined, focused and studious person. From UKM to her many professional roles across Asia-Pacific, she continues to push boundaries,” he said.
Wong noted that Ooi’s passion for human-centred leadership was evident in her first book, published 16 years ago, which explored innovation and the power of people over technology. “With this new book, Christina once again reminds us that strength is not the absence of struggle but the courage to rise above it,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ooi shared that her motivation for the project stemmed from a desire to pass on meaningful life lessons to the next generation. She emphasized the importance of empathy and human connection in an increasingly fast-paced and uncertain world. “I just want to share it with the younger generation, with the next generation, so that they can actually learn to appreciate that human connection. We need people around us, and we should help each other in difficult times and in uncertain times like today,” she said.
“Tough As Nails” brings together eight inspiring true stories of Malaysians who have faced extraordinary challenges and found the courage to rise again. The collection explores the power of resilience through the concept of the ‘3Rs’ – Reset, Restart, and Re-Chart – offering readers fresh perspectives on overcoming adversity and embracing new beginnings. Those featured include Amber Chia, Julie Das, Karen Loh, Dr. Parthiban Navoo, Priscilla Ong, Roger Hew, Venon Tian, and Dr. William Tan, individuals from diverse backgrounds who have made meaningful contributions to society.
