Bernama Adopts AI Tools To Boost Efficiency In News Production

Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) has started acquiring a series of artificial intelligence (AI) tools aimed at enhancing the efficiency of its employees’ work, especially in news production. Bernama Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai said the technology has significantly streamlined tasks, including voice-to-text and multilingual functions, emphasising the importance for the agency to quickly adapt to AI.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, AI training is crucial across all departments and levels within Bernama to ensure employees are equipped with necessary skills. Wong stated that AI tools are technical, but the Bernama team is prepared to integrate them with the creative team, especially with the establishment of The Nation AI office.

In response to concerns that AI may replace human jobs, Wong emphasised that the technology is designed to eliminate mundane tasks, allowing individuals to focus more on creative work. AI tools are meant to assist, not replace, human efforts, ensuring the human element remains integral in news production.

Wong also mentioned the upcoming release of ‘Bernama’s Journey,’ a book documenting the agency’s history and future. The book aims to capture Malaysia’s landmarks and events from a journalist’s perspective, acknowledging the contribution of past and present Bernama staff to Malaysian journalism.

Regarding the ASEAN chairmanship 2025, Wong assured that Bernama is committed to delivering accurate and swift reports while strengthening regional media connections. The agency aims to handle geopolitical issues with precision, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
