Bank Islam Announces Retirement of Chairman Ismail Bakar

Kuala lumpur: Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd has announced the retirement of its chairman, Tan Sri Dr Ismail Bakar, effective August 22, 2026, after six years on the board. He has been serving as the bank's chairman since August 2020.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the bank stated that Ismail Bakar provided leadership and strategic guidance to support the group's growth, governance excellence, and long-term value creation. His tenure also saw the strengthening of Bank Islam's governance framework and corporate transformation agenda.

In the interim, senior independent non-executive director Mohd Yuzaidi Mohd Yusoff will preside over board meetings starting from August 22 until a new chairman is appointed. Bank Islam group chief executive officer YM Raja Datin Paduka Teh Maimunah Raja Abdul Aziz expressed gratitude for Ismail's contributions, highlighting his role in reinforcing the group's governance foundations, strategic focus, and institutional capabilities.

'We thank him for his significant contribution to Bank Islam's development and wish him every success in the future,' she said.
