Kuala lumpur: Bangladesh has reached out to Malaysia, seeking assistance in addressing its liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply challenges. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that Bangladesh has expressed interest in collaborating with Malaysian oil and gas giant Petronas to secure LNG supplies amid its current energy crisis.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Anwar shared the details of this request following a telephone conversation with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. During their discussion, Anwar noted that the two leaders explored various avenues to bolster Malaysia-Bangladesh relations, with a particular focus on the energy and investment sectors which are essential for both nations' economic growth.

Anwar elaborated that the dialogue also covered potential economic collaborations, highlighting investment opportunities with companies like Axiata and the possibility of strategic cooperation with MMC Port. These initiatives aim to fortify economic ties and create new opportunities for Malaysia and Bangladesh.

Furthermore, Anwar emphasized Malaysia's commitment to nurturing its longstanding friendship with Bangladesh. This commitment is grounded in mutual respect and practical cooperation, with an overarching goal to deliver tangible benefits to the citizens of both countries.

International media reports suggest that Bangladesh's current gas supply issues have been exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in West Asia and a recent industrial accident, underscoring the urgency of Bangladesh's request for LNG supply assistance.
