BAIC Group Plans Malaysian Expansion with Arcfox T1 Launch by 2026

Kuala Lampur:Beijing Automotive Group Co Ltd (BAIC Group) is moving forward with its plan to expand operations in Malaysia, targeting the launch of the Arcfox T1 by the end of 2026 and the BJ30 in early 2027.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Chinese automaker intends to locally assemble both models under a completely knocked-down (CKD) scheme as part of its renewed strategy for the Malaysian market. BAIC International's deputy general manager Qi XiaoHui noted that previous expansion efforts faced challenges, primarily due to Malaysia's right-hand-drive requirements and the necessity for local manufacturing facilities.

Qi explained that since Malaysia requires right-hand-drive vehicles, establishing local manufacturing is crucial. She mentioned that BAIC had a local partner in the past, but several practical issues hindered business development. However, the company is now registering its own subsidiary in Malaysia, aiming to enhance its investment and involvement in the region.

She highlighted that preparations for local manufacturing and the establishment of BAIC's Malaysian subsidiary are progressing in parallel. The production line is nearing completion, with final operational preparations underway following the transport of equipment to the plant, which Qi visited two months ago.

Qi emphasized that Arcfox will be an addition to BAIC's Malaysian lineup rather than a replacement for previously announced BAIC-branded products. Both brands will be pursued in the market.

As part of the China International Press Communication Centre (CIPCC) programme, BERNAMA visited several BAIC facilities, including the Beijing Automotive Industry R and D Base in Shunyi District, to gain insights into the group's research, manufacturing, and commercial vehicle operations.

BAIC's operations, as of 2026, include vehicle and component research, development, manufacturing, and mobility services, with a focus on new energy and intelligent vehicle technologies. The company's research and development spending accounts for over 10% of revenue, with a planned investment of 14.91 billion yuan in 2026. BAIC continues to strengthen its international presence with a comprehensive operational system spanning research, production, supply, sales, and services.
