Bahasa Melayu and English Language Prioritization in AI and Digital Era: PM Anwar

Kuala lumpur: The government remains committed to ensuring that Bahasa Melayu functions effectively as both a language of instruction and a medium of knowledge in the era of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar emphasized the importance of students mastering English as a vital second language to remain competitive internationally, asserting that this dual focus is necessary for the nation’s survival in a globalized world without sidelining the national language.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar expressed the government’s intention to promote Bahasa Melayu as a language of instruction and learning, particularly in the fields of digital technology and AI, at a Christmas High-Tea reception organized by the Christian Federation of Malaysia. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusoff was also present at the event.

Anwar, who also serves as Minister of Finance, highlighted that parents from all education streams share a common aspiration for their children to be proficient in both Bahasa Melayu and English. He explained that the government’s approach is not a ‘zero-sum game’, but a balanced policy aligned with national priorities and economic realities.

He stressed the importance of commendable proficiency in Bahasa Melayu among all Malaysians while acknowledging the need to enhance English proficiency to support Malaysia’s emergence as a significant trading nation embracing new technology. Anwar stated that English should not merely be an additional subject but should be mastered to ensure success in the globalized world.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed his commitment to defending and upholding the constitutional position of Bahasa Melayu, as provided for in the Federal Constitution, in response to claims touching on religious, racial, and ethnic sensitivities.
