George town: The Package 2 Ayer Itam-Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway bypass project has reached 91.8 per cent overall physical progress as of June 15, highlighted by the recent installation of precast U-beams for Bridge 4 Span 1.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari announced that the remaining U-beam launching works for Bridge 4 Span 3 are planned for July 27, followed by Span 2 on July 28 and 29. Each precast U-beam measures between 48.93 and 50.47 metres in length, with a weight ranging from 146.8 to 151.5 metric tonnes. The beams are being installed using the tandem lifting method, which involves the use of a 600-tonne crane as the primary lifting crane and a 550-tonne crane as the supporting crane.
Zairil emphasized that the work is being executed in strict adherence to operating procedures and safety standards. This is crucial due to the heavy-duty cranes involved, the high-risk nature of the operations, and the necessity for periodic temporary traffic closures. The Package 2 bypass project is considered a flagship infrastructure project in Penang. It aims to enhance traffic flow and strengthen the state's transport network while establishing itself as a new landmark in Penang's connectivity.
