Kuala Lampur:The defamation lawsuit filed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim against Pendang Member of Parliament Datuk Awang Solahuddin Hashim was amicably settled at the High Court today after Awang Solahuddin withdrew his defamatory statement.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar's lawyer, Datuk SN Nair, informed Judge Roslan Mat Nor that an agreement on the terms of settlement had been reached by both parties. As part of the settlement, the lawsuit was withdrawn with no order as to costs and without the liberty to file afresh. A mutually agreed public statement was attached to the consent motion, and the trial dates were vacated.

Awang Solahuddin's lawyer, Yusfarizal Yussoff, confirmed the settlement. Judge Roslan commended both parties for resolving the dispute amicably and acknowledged Anwar's decision to withdraw the lawsuit.

A public statement released to the media indicated that both parties considered the costs and implications of continuing with the defamation proceedings. They highlighted the importance of focusing on matters of greater significance to the public and nation. Awang Solahuddin retracted all statements made on or around February 21, 2023, which led to the legal action, and agreed not to repeat or republish similar statements.

Anwar initiated the lawsuit on March 3, 2023, following remarks allegedly made by Awang Solahuddin in the Parliament lobby, which implied misuse of power by Anwar for personal political gain. These remarks were said to have harmed Anwar's reputation as a leader. Both parties expressed appreciation for the court's professionalism and urged respect for the resolution to maintain national harmony and stability.
