Attack on Sungai Golok Control Post Aimed at Causing Chaos, Says Deputy Mayor

Narathiwat: The attack on a security control post at the Sungai Golok district office in Narathiwat Province, Thailand, was believed to have been aimed at causing chaos in South Thailand, Sungai Golok Deputy Mayor Apichet Jeh-Ouma stated.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, a group of attackers dressed in black and with covered faces arrived in two vehicles and launched an assault by firing shots and throwing grenades. The attack resulted in the death of one security personnel at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries in the hospital. Twelve others were injured, including four with serious wounds, and are currently receiving treatment at the Sungai Golok Hospital. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The deputy mayor identified the two fatalities as Muhamad Sabri Nasawan and Todsapon Paipim. He remarked on the nature of the attack, noting it occurred as Muslims had just completed their fast.

In Rantau Panjang, Terengganu, trader Muhamad Redzuan Abdullah expressed his concerns about the incident, highlighting its proximity to the Malaysia-Thailand border, just three kilometers away. He mentioned that the explosions and gunshots were audible to local residents, who often mistake such sounds for fireworks.

Jamilah Mohd Zain, another resident, urged Malaysians who frequent Sungai Golok for food to avoid crossing the border for now, given the current unrest.

In response to the attack, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) enhanced security measures along the Malaysia-Thailand border. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed that the police are closely monitoring the situation in Narathiwat Province, enforcing strict controls until the area is deemed safe.
