Asian Games 2026: Jacky, Pei Yao Adapting To Modern Pentathlon Format

Aichi-nagoya: The change in the modern pentathlon format at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games will test the capabilities of two national representatives, Jacky Aw and Lim Pei Yao, when the equestrian discipline or horse riding is replaced with steeplechase. National coach Nik Lini Hayati Nik Kazem said the change required both athletes to develop new skills, but believed they would be able to adapt to realise their target of reaching the final in their debut appearance at the Games next month.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nik Kazem expressed confidence in the athletes' potential, citing their selection for the Asian Games through merit-based qualifications, including their performance at the Asian Championships. The athletes have shown positive development, particularly in running, with noticeable improvements during training and track competitions. Kazem emphasized that Jacky and Pei Yao's current performance cannot be directly compared to their results from the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand or other previous tournaments due to varying locations and competition conditions.

Kazem highlighted the introduction of steeplechase as a new challenge in the modern pentathlon, requiring focused development of skills. The athletes now need to concentrate on five disciplines: shooting, fencing, running, swimming, and steeplechase. The preparations for Jacky and Pei Yao are currently centered on intensive training to ensure they deliver their best performance at the Asian Games.
