ASEAN Summit Concludes with Adoption of 80 Outcome Documents: Highlights Regional Achievements

Kuala lumpur: A total of 80 outcome documents were adopted during the 47th ASEAN Summit held from October 26 to 28, marking another milestone in regional cooperation and partnership.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister’s senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, stated that the documents included joint statements between ASEAN leaders and their counterparts from the United States, Japan, India, New Zealand, and Australia. The outcomes also stemmed from the ASEAN+3 Summit, the East Asia Summit (EAS), the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Leaders’ Meeting, and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit.

Among the significant achievements was the formal admission of Timor-Leste as a full member of ASEAN, following its application for membership in 2011. Tunku Nashrul emphasized that this milestone underscores ASEAN’s principle of inclusivity and Malaysia’s vision of shared regional prosperity. Additionally, a noteworthy development was the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord between Thailand and Cambodia, witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and United States President Donald Trump. This accord reflects Malaysia’s commitment to facilitating regional disputes through peaceful and constructive means.

On the economic front, the summit concluded two significant trade initiatives, namely the upgraded ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) and the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) 3.0. These agreements are set to expand market access, streamline procedures, and open new opportunities in digital and green economies. ASEAN leaders also reaffirmed the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) as the key reference for addressing the situation in Myanmar, urging its full implementation, particularly in halting violence and enhancing humanitarian assistance.

Tunku Nashrul noted that the leaders exchanged views on the South China Sea and Palestine issues, with Malaysia reiterating its support for peace and efforts to address transnational crimes such as online and job scams, food security, and energy transition. Meanwhile, Malaysia expressed its full support for the Philippines as it prepares to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026, hoping that the spirit of unity and cooperation fostered in Kuala Lumpur will continue to thrive in the future.
