ASEAN Power Grid Pivotal for Regional Energy Cooperation: Fadillah

London: The ASEAN Power Grid (APG) is positioned as a critical component in strengthening cooperation among ASEAN member states, as stated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Fadillah, who also serves as the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, emphasized Malaysia’s focus, as the ASEAN Chair this year, on realizing the APG to enhance energy security, accessibility, and affordability in the region.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fadillah highlighted the interconnected nature of regional energy systems, citing the gas explosion in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, which led to a significant shutdown of the gas pipeline. The incident underscored the importance of regional collaboration, as Malaysia’s strong ties with Thailand enabled the neighboring country to provide gas and mitigate the impact on approximately 200 industries and consumers.

During a dinner and meet-and-greet event with the Malaysian diaspora in the United Kingdom at the Malaysian High Commission in London, Fadillah explained the broader implications of such incidents. Although the explosion appeared localized, its effects were felt in the north due to a prevention-driven shutdown. Thailand’s assistance demonstrated the crucial role of the APG for ASEAN member countries during unforeseen events.

The gathering included 80 attendees, including students, staff from government-linked companies, and officials from the Malaysian High Commission in London. Notable figures in attendance were Malaysian High Commissioner to the UK and Northern Ireland Datuk Zakri Jaafar, Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s chief new energy officer Mohd Zarihi Mohd Hashim, Sarawak Energy Bhd’s group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, and a delegation from the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA).

Fadillah remarked on the potential of the APG, citing countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, and Laos, which can harness wind energy but may face shortages. In such scenarios, regional cooperation ensures a sufficient and affordable energy supply, aligning with the vision for the APG.

Fadillah arrived in the UK from Trkiye to lead the Malaysian delegation at the two-day Summit on the Future of Energy Security 2025 held at Lancaster House. The summit concluded yesterday.
