ASEAN Emphasizes Regional Cooperation for Inclusive Economic Growth: PM Anwar

Kuala Lumpur: ASEAN adopts an approach that elevates the regional economy to ensure inclusive growth for the sake of peace and prosperity in the region, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said this was because if any ASEAN member state were to become isolated, left behind, or marginalized, it would burden neighboring countries.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, key areas of cooperation currently being advanced at the ASEAN level include customs and immigration, aimed in part at streamlining legal trade routes and the movement of people between neighboring countries. Anwar highlighted the conflict in Myanmar as an example of unresolved issues that affect the region, citing the influx of 200,000 Rohingya into Malaysia as a burden resulting from limited negotiations with Myanmar.

Improvements in customs and immigration systems are expected to benefit the economy and tourism, particularly for Southeast Asian countries sharing borders. The rich attractions of the region, such as Malaysia’s natural beauty, Thailand’s culture, and the stunning islands of the Philippines and Indonesia, should be promoted collectively through regional tourism efforts.

Anwar emphasized the importance of strengthening intra-ASEAN tourism, encouraging travel within the region by improving cross-border facilities, expanding joint promotional efforts, and ensuring tourist safety. He believes that the tourism sector could become a catalyst for more balanced and inclusive economic growth in the ASEAN region.

Reflecting on ASEAN’s history, Anwar acknowledged the inspiring story and success of the region since its establishment, driven by the vision of past leaders like the late Tun Abdul Razak and his counterparts from Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines. Their vision aimed to make the region peaceful, stable, and neutral during the Cold War.

Anwar also mentioned ongoing efforts to boost intra-ASEAN investment through regional cooperation in the tourism sector, facilitation, and flexibility. Additionally, he discussed the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) initiative, which aligns with energy transition policies and requires significant funding but promises to attract international investments.

Other intra-ASEAN initiatives include cross-border payment connectivity to ease financial transactions and the ASEAN Authorized Economic Operator to facilitate trade within the region.
