Kuala lumpur: After spending the last eight years training in Europe, national alpine skier Aruwin Salehhuddin is set to relocate her training base to the United States (US) beginning this October. The 22-year-old said the move was largely influenced by her decision to further her studies at Boston University, where she will pursue a degree in Public Relations for the next four years. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Aruwin explained that studying in the US would make it challenging to manage her racing and training in Europe due to the financial burden and logistical difficulty of frequent travel. Having trained extensively in Innsbruck, Austria, she decided to part ways with Belgian coach Kai Alaerts to work with American coach Brandy Barna. Aruwin praised Barna as an effective coach, noting that many athletes have improved under her tutelage. She appreciated Barna's open communication style and her ability to push athletes to excel. As Aruwin transitions to the US, she acknowledged the challenge of bala ncing studies and training across multiple locations, including Colorado, California, and Massachusetts. Aruwin also commented on the differences in skiing conditions between Europe and the US, highlighting that the snow in Europe is often artificial due to insufficient snowfall, whereas the US generally has enough natural snowfall. Currently recuperating from a knee injury in Malaysia, Aruwin plans to return to Austria for an indoor skiing camp before heading to New Zealand in August for her first competition with her new coach. She intends to compete in both slalom and giant slalom events, while also navigating the financial demands of winter sports. Aruwin hopes for increased support from corporate sponsors and Malaysians to sustain her international career and aspirations in alpine skiing.
