Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is set to unveil a strategic plan in mid-May aimed at ensuring the continuity of Malaysia's oil supply in response to global uncertainties triggered by the conflict in West Asia and the Strait of Hormuz's closure. Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir highlighted that the plan will primarily focus on maintaining sufficient domestic oil supply to support ongoing economic activities within the country. The government previously assured that current supplies are adequate to last until June.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Petronas is in the final stages of securing new supply sources to guarantee the continued availability of Malaysia's oil supply. Akmal Nasrullah noted that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is expected to present the next schedule concerning the country's oil supply soon, emphasizing that several new sources are being finalized.
During a forum titled 'Energy Crisis 2026: Are We Ready to Rethink Refuel?' at the Universiti Malaya Economics Summit (UMES), Akmal Nasrullah assured that there are sufficient reserves at the operational level. He stated that Malaysia is equipped to handle supply disruptions due to intervention measures and operational management steps that have been implemented.
The government is also exploring regional cooperation as a vital approach to strengthening energy supply resilience. There are ongoing discussions about regional reserves at the ASEAN level, although the framework and mechanisms require further detailing due to diplomatic considerations among member countries.
Regarding the use of B15 biodiesel, Akmal Nasrullah mentioned the government's optimism about implementing the increased biodiesel blend by June 1. This initiative is expected to help extend Malaysia's diesel supply, with the necessary structure and distribution channels already established and receiving strong commitment from relevant ministries and agencies.
