Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that Malaysia adopts a balanced approach in economic diplomacy, prioritising national interests, including energy security. He said trade negotiations with strategic partners such as Australia are conducted on a reciprocal basis, taking into account Malaysia's need to import raw materials such as phosphate for fertiliser production, while exporting urea.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted the importance of reciprocal trade arrangements, mentioning discussions with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. During their meeting, Albanese requested urea, to which Anwar agreed on the condition of receiving phosphate from Australia. Anwar also addressed requests for oil, stating that Malaysia could only supply oil if there was a surplus, refuting claims about oil sales to the Philippines.
Anwar emphasized the need for accurate information regarding national security issues, urging parties not to politicize these matters. He reiterated Malaysia's commitment to strengthening economic ties with key trading partners like China and the United States, despite differing geopolitical views. Anwar clarified Malaysia's stance on various international issues, asserting the country's independence and sovereignty.
He also affirmed that Malaysia would not compromise on key national policies, particularly those concerning Bumiputera interests, during trade negotiations. Anwar stressed the importance of maintaining domestic political stability and ensuring that foreign investment flows remain unaffected. He pointed out Malaysia's strengths in high-value sectors such as electrical and electronics and artificial intelligence, which continue to attract global investments, with multinational companies like Intel and Amazon Web Services expanding their presence in the country.
