Moscow: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today criticized unilateral decisions made by certain countries, labeling them as mere displays of power and arrogance that ignore the interests of smaller nations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized the importance of respecting all communities and nations, regardless of their size, wealth, or status. He made these remarks during a public lecture titled ‘Bridging Worlds In A Fractured Age’ at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), where he was also awarded an honorary doctorate.
Anwar, who also holds the position of Finance Minister, highlighted that bilateral relations encompass not just political and diplomatic ties but also trade, investments, and industrial cooperation. He stressed the need for countries to maintain strong economic foundations without neglecting human values.
Expressing gratitude towards Russian President Vladimir Putin and the people of Russia, Anwar appreciated the honor given to Malaysia and the warm reception extended to the Malaysian delegation. Despite differing backgrounds, cultures, and civilizations, Anwar noted the positive meeting with Putin, emphasizing mutual respect.
Anwar remarked on the importance of respect and equality within ASEAN’s 10-member states and advocated for these principles to be promoted globally. He acknowledged the hospitality and recognition offered by Russia and emphasized the potential for friendship despite cultural and religious differences.
Bilateral relations, Anwar noted, also involve educational exchanges, with nearly 400 Russian students in Malaysia and approximately 700 Malaysian students in Russia. He praised MGIMO for including Bahasa Malaysia as a subject, while also noting that Universiti Malaya offers the Russian language.
