Calicut: The deferment of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's petition for a pardon was guided by legal principles, constitutional mandates, and official advice, as stated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar emphasized that his involvement in the Pardons Board meeting adhered strictly to the law and the guidance provided by the Attorney General.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted the importance of a prime minister expressing views based on legal advice and official protocols. He reiterated that while he provided his perspective during the meeting, the ultimate decision rests with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, who considers all relevant factors during the Pardons Board deliberations.
Anwar urged that Najib's pardon issue be evaluated through the lens of legal principles and governance, rather than personal biases. He underscored his commitment to the rule of law and constitutional agreements in offering his opinion on the matter. Anwar clarified that his approach was devoid of prejudice or personal animosity.
While acknowledging the political dynamics and strong opinions from UMNO leaders, Anwar maintained that his actions were guided by principles he deemed correct, aligning with the rule of law and governance values. He acknowledged the complexity of the situation but resolved to follow the path he believed was aligned with legal and governance principles.
Last Friday, Sultan Ibrahim agreed to defer Najib's pardon plea to a future Pardons Board meeting. This decision was communicated by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department following the 63rd Pardons Board Meeting for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya at Istana Negara on September 11.
On December 26 of the previous year, Najib received a 15-year prison sentence and a fine of RM11.4 billion after the High Court found him guilty of multiple charges, including abuse of power and money laundering involving RM2.3 billion from 1MDB funds.
