Amendments to Postal Services Act Anticipated by Year-End, Announces Fahmi

Kuala lumpur: Amendments to the Postal Services Act 2012 are expected to be tabled in Parliament by year-end, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He stated that the amendment bill is currently being drafted and will be submitted to the Cabinet, aiming to incorporate updates that reflect technological advancements and the evolving landscape of courier and e-commerce services.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Communications Ministry is considering new developments, such as the expansion of courier service providers and aspects of postal delivery that were previously defined under the universal service obligation (USO). Fahmi explained the need to revise the definition of USO to align with changes in parcel delivery and products within the e-commerce ecosystem. Industry players, including e-commerce platforms and courier firms, are encouraged to provide feedback to strengthen the legislation.

The Communications Ministry had earlier expressed intentions to amend the Act to foster a more sustainable and competitive postal ecosystem while ensuring the welfare of workers. In addition to legislative updates, Fahmi highlighted the NADI Entrepreneurs @ Shopee campaign, which aims to promote NADI centres as community hubs for learning, empowerment, and capacity-building. This initiative, a collaboration between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and Shopee, seeks to create practical opportunities that address the real needs of the people.

Fahmi expressed hopes for the expansion of such initiatives, enabling more entrepreneurs to tap into digital markets, enhance their brands, and boost household and community incomes. He also encouraged NADI entrepreneurs to set higher targets, embrace innovation, and improve productivity in their businesses.
