Kuala Lumpur: The Alliance for a Safe Community has called for clear, forward-looking regulations and a comprehensive ethical framework to govern the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to safeguard the public interest.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, its chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, in a statement today, emphasized the urgent need for policymakers, technology leaders, civil society, and international institutions to collaborate in developing a framework that ensures AI is safe, inclusive, and used in the best interest of humanity. He warned that unregulated AI deployment could lead to serious risks, including the invasion of privacy, misuse of personal data, algorithmic bias, job displacement, and the proliferation of misinformation.
In response, Lee stated that the Alliance for a Safe Community has proposed five key components for a robust regulatory framework. These include AI accountability laws to define legal responsibility for harm caused by AI systems, particularly in high-risk applications, and mandates for transparency and explainability, ensuring AI decisions impacting individuals are explainable and transparent.
He added that data protection and privacy standards must be strengthened to prevent unauthorized access or misuse of personal data by AI systems. There is also a need for pre-deployment risk assessments and certification processes for high-impact AI tools.
Furthermore, Lee proposed the establishment of independent public oversight bodies to oversee compliance, conduct audits, and address grievances involving AI. He also advocated for a Code of Ethics and Integrity in AI Technology to guide its development and deployment.
This code, according to Lee, should prioritize human-centric design, emphasizing human dignity, autonomy, and well-being, along with non-discrimination, fairness, honesty, integrity, environmental responsibility, inclusivity, and collaboration.
He stressed the importance of embedding ethical considerations, transparency, and empathy into the core of AI design and implementation. As AI continues to transform human life, Lee highlighted the increasing urgency to ensure its development and use are grounded in responsibility, accountability, and integrity.
He concluded by noting that in an era where AI is rapidly shaping every facet of human life, it is critical to develop and deploy this powerful technology with a human-centric approach. AI development should prioritize fairness, accountability, and inclusivity, avoiding bias in decision-making systems, enhancing human potential rather than replacing it, and making its benefits accessible to all.
