Alam Flora Reports Significant Drop in Waste Collection During Ramadan

Kuala Lumpur: Alam Flora Sdn Bhd (Alam Flora) has reported a decrease in domestic solid waste collection over the first 20 days of Ramadan this year compared to the same period last year.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Alam Flora’s CEO Shariman Yusuf Mohamed Zain noted that the waste collected in Kuala Lumpur saw a significant decline of nearly 23 percent, amounting to 29,300 tonnes this year compared to 38,000 tonnes in 2024.

In Pahang, Shariman stated that waste collection decreased by 6.43 percent to 13,100 tonnes, down from 14,000 tonnes last year. Meanwhile, in Putrajaya, the waste collection figures remained unchanged at 2,000 tonnes.

Shariman attributed the decrease in domestic waste volume in Kuala Lumpur to the reduction in the number of Ramadan bazaars, which dropped from 112 locations in 2024 to just 66 this year. This reduction led to a decrease in visitor numbers and business activities at the bazaars, directly impacting waste generation.

He assured that waste collection and public cleaning services in Kuala Lumpur, Kuantan, and Putrajaya would continue as usual throughout the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration. Shariman emphasized the importance of cooperation from all parties in separating food waste and recyclable materials following the guidelines of the waste separation-at-source programme introduced by the government, to maintain cleanliness in their respective areas.
