Rantau Panjang: The Home Ministry (KDN) has reported early success from its Border Control Agency (AKPS) initiative, with approximately RM400,000 in seizures recorded at 22 of the country’s border entry points, out of a total of 140. These figures were revealed by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who noted that the initial phase of AKPS is designed to evaluate the inter-agency operations’ effectiveness in tackling legal violations at Malaysia’s borders.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Saifuddin highlighted that AKPS is currently operational at key locations, including Rantau Panjang in Kelantan, each presenting unique challenges and operational patterns. He cited the example of Rantau Panjang as a land checkpoint, contrasting it with the Johor Bahru-Singapore route, which handles up to 500,000 travelers daily. The Ministry is also looking into operational improvements at major points like KLIA1 and KLIA2.
Saifuddin elaborated on the complexity of unifying different agencies such as the Customs Department, Immigration Department, MAQIS, and the Road Transport Department under a single command due to their distinct standard operating procedures. The operations have shown promising results, with seizures totaling RM400,000 since AKPS began on December 1 of last year.
The Home Minister also pointed out the ongoing challenge of monitoring smuggling activities at illegal jetties despite the closure of 212 illegal crossings, which has significantly improved the situation. The plan is to gradually extend AKPS coverage to all 140 entry points based on operational needs and available staffing from the existing agencies.
Saifuddin also mentioned the importance of streamlining the process of transferring agency assets for shared use under AKPS, which would enhance the initiative’s effectiveness. He expressed satisfaction with AKPS’s performance but acknowledged the need for further improvements nearly five months into its implementation.
