Aidilfitri: Kelantan Register 100 Percent Increase In Garbage Disposal During Festive Season

Kelantan: The amount of garbage collected in Kelantan has more than doubled during the Aidilfitri festive season compared to normal days, according to state Local Government, Housing, Health and Environment Committee chairman Hilmi Abdullah. He reported that on average, 200 metric tonnes of garbage were collected daily before the festive season, but this figure surged to 400 metric tonnes per day during the festive period.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Hilmi Abdullah explained that while the garbage collection schedule remained unchanged, the volume of waste increased significantly due to the traditional exodus of balik kampung, where city dwellers return to their hometowns, and the numerous open house events organized by the public. These cultural practices contribute to the heightened waste disposal witnessed during the festive season.

Hilmi further mentioned that in order to accommodate the increased waste, the operating hours of landfills have been extended until morning. This adjustment ensures that the waste management system can cope with the elevated demand. “Among the landfills involved are in Beris Lalang, Pasir Puteh, Ketereh, Tanah Merah, and Tumpat,” he said, noting that the surge in garbage was predominantly observed in main towns compared to other districts.
