Lumut: UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi outlined four prerequisites to enable the party to retake the Lumut parliamentary seat, along with the Pangkor and Pasir Panjang state seats in the upcoming 16th general election (GE16).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the prerequisites include unity and uniting the Lumut UMNO Division members and fostering ties with Barisan Nasional (BN) component members. Ahmad Zahid emphasized that Lumut UMNO and BN must be united, as internal discord, rather than a strong political opponent, has historically weakened their efforts. He urged party members to abandon counterproductive practices such as backstabbing and leader blaming, stating that the primary prerequisite for winning is uniting the Lumut UMNO Division.
Ahmad Zahid further highlighted the necessity of collaboration with component partners like MIC and MCA, stressing that UMNO cannot retake the seats on their own. He called for a cultural shift within the party to demonstrate to their partners that UMNO has changed.
Additionally, Ahmad Zahid identified winning the social media battleground and adopting strategic voter engagement as essential. He pointed out that social media is now a crucial arena for political battles and that UMNO Youth and UMNO Puteri need to excel in digital narratives. He emphasized the importance of reaching voters through relevant and convincing social media content to rebuild public trust. Ahmad Zahid concluded by stating that GE16 is the last chance to retake all three seats in Lumut and urged not to waste the opportunity.
