Aerotrain Project Timeline Unaffected by MAHB Privatisation, Confirms Chairman

Kuala Lumpur: The timeline for the completion of the Aerotrain project at KL International Airport (KLIA) remains unaffected by the recent privatisation of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), as confirmed by its chairman, Dr. Nungsari Ahmad Radhi. He dismissed speculations linking any delay in the project to the company’s privatisation, attributing the setbacks instead to frequent changes in government and leadership over the years.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Nungsari clarified that the decision to replace the Aerotrain was made as early as 2016. However, political shifts between 2018 and 2022 led to delays in implementing the project. Over the past six years, the country has seen five different prime ministers, chairmen, and chief executive officers, each change affecting the decision-making process within MAHB.

Dr. Nungsari emphasized that despite the challenges, the management remained aware of the need to replace the train and recommended it. Unfortunately, circumstances beyond their control slowed the process. He assured that the project is now progressing as scheduled, with testing currently underway.

The chairman highlighted that all necessary components for the project are in place, including the train on the track and the power supply ready. Testing is ongoing, and as it is a public transport system, approval from the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) is required. The service is expected to be operational by the second quarter of this year.

The Aerotrain, which is a crucial transport mode between airport terminals, was suspended in March 2023 for maintenance and upgrading works following a breakdown. Initially, there was a promise to restore service by the new year. Having been operational for 25 years, the Aerotrain has been a fundamental part of KLIA’s transport network since 1998. In January this year, MAHB announced that the Aerotrain service would resume in the second quarter of 2025.
