Kuala lumpur: Colonial-era laws restricting students' freedom should be abolished to allow the true meaning of independence to be fully realised, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He emphasized that university students should have more freedom to voice their views and participate in activities, as they play a crucial role in shaping the country's future.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar reiterated the importance of abolishing university laws that hinder student activities. He noted that older generations are not always right, and young people should not be prevented from speaking out or participating in activities due to potential mistakes. He advocated for providing them with space, clarifying that freedom does not equate to the absence of limits, as the country is governed by the rule of law.

Anwar spoke at the Ambang Merdeka Sahabat MADANI 2026 highlight programme at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Permatang Pauh. He expressed that young individuals should be trusted to share their views and ideas, with mistakes being addressed through appropriate channels when necessary.

The Prime Minister highlighted that this approach would cultivate a younger generation capable of expressing themselves confidently, acting responsibly, and contributing to Malaysia's development as an independent nation. He stressed that independence extends beyond freedom from physical colonisation, encompassing the empowerment of citizens to determine the country's future.

Anwar encouraged young people to learn from the history of the struggle for independence and build upon it, aiming to help Malaysia achieve greater progress and earn international respect.
