Kuala lumpur: The powers of the minister in managing Tabung Haji (TH) should be limited and checks and balances strengthened to ensure weaknesses in the institution's governance are not repeated, said the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, ABIM Secretary-General Ahmad Fawwaz Ahmad Shukri emphasized the importance of reform due to the minister's extensive powers previously impacting various aspects of TH's management, including hibah announcements, haj subsidies, and decisions concerning funds and investments. He advocated for limiting or improving these powers with a fairer system of checks and balances.
Ahmad Fawwaz also stressed the necessity for TH to be led by professionals, experts, religious scholars, and intellectuals, not only at the top level but also in its subsidiaries and entities under its supervision. He highlighted the need for continued improvements in governance and management, particularly in contract management and akad, while ensuring sound governance principles in investment activities.
The reforms, he noted, are crucial to restoring and maintaining public confidence in TH as an institution entrusted with managing the financial affairs of Muslims. He asserted that changes beginning with good checks and balances and management will translate into public confidence.
In addition, Ahmad Fawwaz called for immediate legal action against those responsible for causing damage or losses to TH to prevent recurrence, aligning with the memorandum submitted by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) at the Tabung Haji RCI Solidarity Peace Gathering outside Menara TH.
He mentioned that a special session was held with TH's Chief Executive Officer, and stressed the need for NGOs to monitor developments closely, asserting the public's right to be informed.
Lastly, Ahmad Fawwaz welcomed the special Dewan Rakyat sitting on Aug 11 to debate the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on TH, expressing hope for a transparent debate with public interest prioritized over political sentiments.
