Abidin Mosque Introduces Childcare Facility to Support Parent Worshippers During Tarawih Prayers

Kuala Terengganu: A transit centre designed for children aged three to seven years at the Abidin Mosque in Terengganu is providing parents with the opportunity to perform tarawih prayers with greater focus.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abidin Mosque’s chief executive, Wan Mohd Hazim Wan Mohd Hashim, stated that the Raudah Aulad Centre, also known as the Children’s Play Room, which has been operational since the beginning of Ramadan, has been well-received by worshippers. This initiative allows parents to engage in prayer without interruptions, addressing prior concerns about distractions caused by children during prayer times.

Wan Mohd Hazim explained that the centre was established in response to feedback from worshippers who experienced disturbances from children’s noise. The mosque’s study led to the opening of the centre in 2017 to benefit both parents and other congregants. He emphasized the importance of minimizing disruptions for worshippers and imams, who may be affected while memorizing surahs during prayer.

He further noted that parents had been actively searching for mosques offering childcare services to help them concentrate on their prayers without the worry of managing their children. The centre accommodates about 20 children each night, who are engaged in various activities under the supervision of three female assistants selected by the mosque management. It operates from 8 pm until the conclusion of the 20 rakaats of tarawih, around 10.30 pm.

Although not mandatory, the mosque encourages parents to utilize the childcare facility for the collective benefit of the congregation. Wan Mohd Hazim acknowledged some parents’ hesitancy, citing safety concerns as a possible reason. However, he assured that the safety of children remains a top priority and shared that children who initially cried adjusted well over time.

He also addressed any misconceptions regarding children being unwelcome at the mosque, clarifying that the centre aims to support parents while fostering a learning environment for children who can independently manage themselves.
