Abdul Rahman’s Decision to Withdraw Candidacy Seen as Sign of Healthy Politics

Kuala lumpur: The decision by Sabah UMNO deputy chief Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan to step aside and withdraw his candidacy for the Tempasuk state seat in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election has been hailed as a positive move for political health and local representation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan praised Abdul Rahman’s decision as a reflection of responsible leadership that prioritizes both the party and the community’s interests. Mohamad Hasan highlighted that Abdul Rahman, who currently serves as the Tuaran UMNO Division chief but contested in the Kota Belud parliamentary constituency, decided to make way for Azuwan Marjan Norjan, the Kota Belud UMNO Division head.

Mohamad Hasan emphasized that this gesture exemplifies healthy political practices by allowing local leaders to take the forefront. He expressed hope that this would facilitate new leadership or candidates in securing victory. Mohamad shared these thoughts while distributing Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination kits and laptops to over 1,000 students in the Rembau parliamentary constituency.

Abdul Rahman had previously informed BN chairman and UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi of his intention to allow a local representative from Kota Belud to contest the seat. The Election Commission has scheduled polling for the 17th Sabah state election on November 29, with nominations on November 15 and early voting on November 25.

In the last state election, the Tempasuk seat was secured by Datuk Mohd Arsad Bistari, representing BN, with a majority of 1,685 votes.
