Kuala lumpur: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has urged the younger generation to change the perception that government employment is the only career option and instead venture boldly into technology-driven entrepreneurship to power Sarawak's future economy.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari highlighted the global economy's shift towards renewable energy, the digital economy, artificial intelligence (AI), and green technology, encouraging Sarawakian youth to seize opportunities in these sectors. He emphasized the need for young entrepreneurs in the new economy, drawing parallels with technology leaders like Jack Ma, Bill Gates, and Jensen Huang during a town hall session held in conjunction with Sarawak Day 2026 at the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS).

He further noted Sarawak's advantage in the green economy due to its tropical rainforests serving as carbon sinks and its renewable energy resources, including hydropower, solar, biomass, and low-carbon natural gas. To support this agenda, the Sarawak government is offering free tertiary education for 64 strategic programmes, covering fields such as computer science, cyber analytics, chemistry, and aerospace.

Abang Johari also emphasized the importance of understanding the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) for safeguarding Sarawak's rights. He cited the takeover of Bintulu Port as a success in reclaiming rights under MA63 and mentioned ongoing negotiations with the Federal Government. He proposed strengthening MA63 studies at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and UTS to produce more legal experts.

On sports, Abang Johari mentioned the state government's commitment to investing in sports facilities and athlete development, expressing readiness to co-host major sporting events like the SEA Games. He encouraged instilling a sports spirit among youth, referencing Cape Verde's success in holding Spain to a 0-0 draw in a World Cup match as an inspiration for Sarawak, with its population of nearly 2.8 million.
