Kuala Lumpur: Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik are currently uncertain about their participation in the upcoming Orleans Masters scheduled from March 4 to 9, due to a resurfacing of Aaron’s old wrist injury during a recent training session. This has raised doubts about their ability to compete in the event.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, national men’s doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi stated, “I can’t give an answer on that yet. We need to assess Aaron’s condition there. If there’s an opportunity for them to play at the Orleans Masters, why not?” This highlights the team’s cautious approach as they prioritize Aaron’s health and readiness for the competition.
Herry also emphasized that the All England remains the primary focus for Aaron and Wooi Yik. Their performance in this prestigious tournament, scheduled to begin on March 11, largely depends on Aaron’s condition in England. Herry expressed optimism, noting that if Aaron’s wrist holds up, the pair is expected to at least reach the semi-finals or even the final, as they did last year when they finished as runners-up.
Despite the wrist issue, Herry confirmed that it would not prevent their participation in the All England. The Orleans Masters in France is viewed as a crucial warm-up event for the All England, allowing players to fine-tune their skills and strategies.
Historically, Aaron and Wooi Yik have been strong contenders, having been runners-up at the All England in both 2019 and last year. This year, Malaysia will have a strong representation at the All England, with seven men’s doubles pairs competing. Four pairs are from the Badminton Association of Malaysia, including Aaron-Wooi Yik, while three pairs are professional teams, featuring top players such as world number two Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Mohd Rumsani.
As the dates for these significant tournaments approach, the focus remains on Aaron’s recovery and the strategic decisions that will ensure the best possible performance in the All England.
