Aaron Calls For Preservation Of Dayak Heritage Amid Modernisation

Sarawak: The Dayak community in Sarawak has been reminded to continue preserving the customs, culture and heritage handed down through generations, ensuring they remain alive and are not lost amid rapid modernisation and technological advancement. National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the Dayak community must keep pace with changing times without losing sight of its cultural roots to ensure continued progress.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Aaron emphasized that inherited traditions are not just historical relics, but a heritage that shapes the identity of a nation. He stressed the importance of exposing the younger generation to language, customs, arts, and cultural values to ensure the heritage passed down by their ancestors remains alive and continues to flourish. In a Facebook post, he highlighted the need to harness technological, educational, and economic progress to document, promote, and safeguard cultural heritage for future generations.

Aaron, who is also the Kanowit MP, underscored the significance of the Gawai Dayak celebration, which symbolizes gratitude for the harvest, blessings, peace, and prosperity enjoyed by all. As an Iban descendant who grew up in a longhouse, he reflected on the fond memories the Gawai celebration brought back, including the communal spirit in preparing food, the laughter of relatives, and the strong family ties that unite the community.

He emphasized the values of respect for elders, the spirit of sharing, and helping one another as guiding principles he learned in childhood. Aaron pointed out that Malaysia's unique cultures, languages, and customs are invaluable treasures, contributing to the nation's rich cultural heritage. He noted that festivals like Gawai Dayak provide opportunities for people to understand and respect one another, forming the foundation for Malaysia's progress as a united, stable, and respected nation.
