Gombak: A total of 669 media practitioners and former journalists nationwide have benefited from Tabung Kasih@HAWANA, with nearly RM2 million disbursed since the initiative was launched in 2023. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the initiative, carried out by the Communications Ministry through the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), reflects the MADANI Government's ongoing commitment to supporting media practitioners in need.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, in less than three years, Tabung Kasih@HAWANA has assisted hundreds of media practitioners facing financial difficulties or health issues. In its first year, 28 recipients were helped with a total contribution of RM45,000. The number of recipients rose to 229 in 2024, with contributions amounting to RM648,490. In 2025, 349 recipients received a total of RM1.059 million. This year, assistance has been provided to 63 recipients with contributions totalling RM110,000.
The announcement was made after Teo handed over Tabung Kasih@HAWANA aid to former Harian Metro sub-editor Pahmi Mat Ali, who is currently facing health issues, at his home in Gombak Setia. Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj were also present at the event.
Teo further mentioned that the initiative would be intensified in the two weeks leading up to Aidilfitri to alleviate the burden of those in need. She urged private companies and government-linked companies (GLCs) to contribute to or collaborate with the fund, enabling more media personnel to receive assistance. She expressed a warm welcome for the support from GLCs or private companies, stating that as the fund grows, it can help more recipients and provide higher contributions to those in need of larger support.
