Kuala lumpur: Malaysia's chef de mission (CDM) to the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan, has admitted feeling under pressure following the national athletes' extraordinary success at the recently concluded Glasgow Commonwealth Games. According to BERNAMA News Agency, the athletes' encouraging performance at the Commonwealth Games has indirectly placed higher expectations on those who will be competing at the Asiad next month, while admitting that it would be a tough act to follow. Mohd Sumali expressed that the unexpected yet encouraging achievement has set a precedent, as Malaysia has never performed so well at the Commonwealth Games. "I feel a bit under pressure when we consider the outstanding Commonwealth Games achievement. It was unexpected as much as it was encouraging, as we've never done so well at the Commonwealth Games. So, we will definitely feel the pressure to keep the momentum going at the Asiad, but I'm confident that with the athletes we have and the sports we will be c ompeting in, we have several sports that will deliver medals," he told reporters after visiting the squash team's training centre. Commenting on the official medal target for the continental multi-sport Games in Japan from September 19 to October 4, Mohd Sumali said it would only be announced after getting the green light from the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), National Sports Council (NSC), and the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS). For the record, Malaysia exceeded the five-gold target at the July 23 to August 2 Glasgow Commonwealth Games by returning with eight gold, three silver, and five bronze medals. At the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2022, Malaysia had a 6-8-18 medal haul.
