18 Malaysian Athletes Face Dilemma Over SPM Exams and Thailand SEA Games Participation

Kuala lumpur: Malaysian Chief de Mission (CDM) of the 2025 Thailand SEA Games, Nurul Huda Abdullah, has expressed concerns regarding the participation of 18 national athletes who are scheduled to sit for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination this year. The SPM is set to occur from November 3 to December 23, overlapping with the biennial games scheduled from December 9 to 20.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nurul Huda has yet to receive a response from the Ministry of Education about whether special accommodations can be made for the athletes to participate in the games without affecting their exams. This situation presents a significant dilemma for the athletes and their families as they must decide between competing in the games or completing their exams.

“There have been concerns raised to me about athletes who are supposed to sit for their SPM examinations, which clash with the SEA Games schedule. So far, there has been no definite response,” Nurul Huda stated after the Team Managers’ Meeting for the Thailand SEA Games at Wisma OCM.

Additionally, Nurul Huda highlighted the logistical challenges facing the team managers at the 2025 Thailand SEA Games, as there will be no games village. Instead, athletes and officials will be accommodated in various hotels based on their sports events. She emphasized the critical role of team managers in ensuring the welfare of the athletes amidst these challenges.

“Our contingent will be spread around so many hotels and that will be a big challenge for us and this is where we will also rely on team managers as well. Their responsibility is very huge and this is what I stressed today in our team managers’ meeting. They will be responsible and also accountable for their teams’ welfare,” she remarked.

In other developments, Nurul Huda announced that her team has compiled a shortlist of athletes to carry the Jalur Gemilang at the games. This list will be forwarded to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, who will decide the suitable candidate for the honor.
