Kuala Lumpur: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has received 13 reports concerning the publication of an incomplete illustration of the national flag, Jalur Gemilang, featured on the front page of a local Chinese daily newspaper yesterday.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed the incident, noting that an investigation is being carried out under Section 4(1)(b) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984. “Yes, we have received the reports, and an investigation is currently underway,” he said when contacted.
He further mentioned that police will summon individuals associated with the newspaper to record their statements in the near future. The incident gained significant attention on social media, showing the Jalur Gemilang without the crescent moon-a vital symbol representing Islam, the official religion of Malaysia-positioned next to the Chinese flag.
The image led to public outrage, with numerous netizens criticizing the newspaper for its insensitivity. In response to the backlash, the local daily issued an apology yesterday, citing a ‘technical error’ for the mistake and expressing regret for the incident.
