UPDATE ON CASE INVOLVING MAN ARRESTED FOR VOLUNTARILY CAUSING GRIEVOUS HURT WITH DANGEROUS WEAPON

On 6 June 2021 at 6.06am, the Police responded to a case of assault at a residential unit along 2 Jalan Bukit Merah Road. Police officers who were patrolling in the vicinity were approached by a 59-year-old woman with blood-stained hands at the ground floor, and proceeded to the residential unit on the second floor of the said block.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a 48-year-old Singaporean Chinese man had allegedly attacked four individuals, who are residing in the unit, with a knife. He allegedly entered the unit while the four individuals were asleep and assaulted two female tenants of the unit with a knife. Two male tenants of the same unit came to the women's call for help and attempted to subdue the 48-year-old man. Another 31-year-old male tenant, who had awoken from his sleep in another room due to the ongoing commotion, had escaped from the unit to seek assistance from police officers on patrol nearby. He did not suffer any injuries.

The 48-year-old man was then subdued and arrested by the officers at scene for suspected voluntarily causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapon, possession of offensive weapon, and drug-related offences. Two men and two women, aged between 18 and 59 were conveyed to the hospital. The details of the individuals are as follows:

a. One 39-year-old woman, Vietnam national. She suffered knife wounds and is undergoing medical treatment. She is in a stable condition.

b. One 59-year-old woman, Malaysian national. She suffered knife wounds and is undergoing medical treatment.

c. One 18-year-old man, Malaysian national. He fell down a flight of stairs while fleeing from the scene. He is in a stable condition.

d. One 24-year-old man, Malaysian national. He suffered knife wounds and is undergoing medical treatment.

The man is believed to have acted alone and preliminary investigations do not suggest this to be an act of terror. He has been traced for several drug offences since 1991, and was last released from prison on 6 October 2020 for his last drug-related conviction, where he was sentenced to seven years imprisonment and six strokes of the cane.

Police investigations are ongoing. Notwithstanding the preliminary findings and the arrest of the man, the Police are continuing their investigations into the motive of the assault and have stepped up enhanced patrols in the vicinity of the incident.
